Spokesman for the National Directorate Security (NDS) Hasib Sediqi said that the Taliban attempted to disrupt Inauguration Day, but were unsuccessful, at a press conference in Kabul on Friday.
Sediqi said that in the past three weeks alone the NDS foiled 38 planned attacks and arrested three suicide attackers in Kabul who were plotting to attack the day of President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai's inauguration.
"The plans of the insurgents were to collapse districts and attack national elements," Sediqi said. "They [terrorists] want to create more terror and instill fear in the people with their new tactics."
He detailed the works of the NDS, stating that several insurgent groups and terrorists are now in custody in several provinces throughout Afghanistan, but still raised concerns on the lack of sufficient and efficient arms and facilities.
"To fight against insurgents you need to be well-equipped, and we are in need of effective arms."
In addition, Sediqi added that the signing of the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) will not threaten neighboring countries.
Meanwhile, he put emphasis on calling '1919' when anyone witnesses something suspicious so that future attacks are prevented with the assistance of the public.
"We are here for our people. We are here so that everyone can celebrate a special and happy Eid. Eid Mubarak."
